International Adoption Pediatrician Visit

So, yesterday I was just too exhausted to post this because it was a LONG day for us ALL!  Katie was SO tired that she slept in this morning until 10:30am! The International Adoption Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital is awesome! Those guys did some in depth testing to include the following: evaluation by nursing staff, the pediatric nurse practitioner, an occupational therapist, a social worker and the infectious disease pediatrician. We won't hear about her labs for a couple of weeks, but they drew lab work to insure that she has received all of her immunizations and what she will or won't need. They immunized her for Pneumococcal diseases and gave her a TB skin test.  I must say to make it through a four hour appointment and deal with being stuck three different times at the end.

So, here's how they ranked her (and we are VERY pleased with this ranking) because since she lived in an orphanage for over two years of her life, she is doing amazingly well!  Most children from orphanages do have delays in the beginning, but they do catch up.

So, she is 29 months old (as for chronological age) and here are her rankings:

Gross Motor Skills: 20 months
Language Skills: 22 months
Fine Motor Skills: 24 months
Personal/Social Skills: 27 months

They said they have no concerns about her catching up because she is now in an environment where she can grow and receive individual attention and love.

The biggest issues we are having with her now have to do with temper tantrums.  But, what two year old doesn't have temper tantrums?  She is a VERY determined little girl to say the least and when she doesn't get her way, she requires time outs.  We have been using time out and she seems to respond well to that.  The social worker we spoke with said she was pleased with how we are disciplining her and that we are doing it from the beginning so that Katie knows what is expected of her instead of how some parents give their kids everything and then switch things on them.  She said consistency was the key and this is good parenting.  Aaron and I are glad she said this because it supports how we want to parent.  Some of our family disagrees with the use of time out at her age, but at two years old if our parents would have put US in time out, we might not have done some of the things we did do.  So, instead of spanking...we use time out and it works for Katie.  She doesn't do things that are not acceptable such as throw her food.  When we were kids, spanking was accepted and used.  It is not something we want to do, so time out works!

We will have a follow-up visit in six months to re-assess her developmental milestones.  But, we are SO pleased with the services at Cincinnati Children's International Adoption Clinic.
